 
The Columbia River Highway enhanced access to a variety of scenic natural features. The sweeping panorama of Crown Point and the majesty of towering Multnomah Falls are outstanding examples:   Carlton Watkins took some of the first photographs of the Columbia River Gorge in the late 1860s before there was a road of any kind along most of the Columbia River. Photographic equipment of the time was extremely bulky, heavy, and temperamental.
